Twitter users may still be adjusting to the site's new hearts, but the company is offering some relief to frustrated users who have been upset about another recent update.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
The social network said Friday it would finally start to limit how often the blue dot notification appeared in the Moments tab within the Twitter app. It's not clear how much less often users should expect to see the rage-inducing dot, but it will likely be welcome news to many users</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
A quick recap: Last month Twitter introduced Moments, a new section of its app that surfaces curated collections of tweets around specific news stories, events and other conversations happening on Twitter. The much-hyped feature was one of the company's biggest updates in years but all anyone could focus on was the blue dot that wouldn't go away.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
For once, Twitter, it seems, was listening. In a tweet Friday, the company said they would change the feature so the notification would appear "less frequently," though they didn't elaborate on how often it would appear.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
While many users are relieved, some took the opportunity to complain about the other feature everyone seems to hate: the new favorites, er likes.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
While it seems unlikely Twitter would reverse course on the <a data-crackerjax="#post-slider" href="http://mashable.com/2015/11/03/twitter-like-button/" style="color: #00aeef; text-decoration: none;">despised</a> heart, this change, at least, proves that Twitter is (sometimes) listening. Maybe there's still hope for that star.</div>

Facebook is using its latest experiment with Messenger to expand the way it uses facial recognition.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
Facebook is testing a new feature in Messenger called "Photo Magic," which uses face recognition to make it easier for people to share photos with friends right after they shoot them. The test will begin to roll out to iOS and Android users in Australia this week.</div>
<div class="see-also" style="font-weight: bold; text-transform: uppercase;">
<div class="inline-ad-seealso" style="margin: 0px 18.75px 0px auto; max-width: 625px;">
</div>
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
The concept is similar to Moments, the private photo-sharing app Facebook launched earlier this year. When enabled, Messenger will nudge you to share photos when it detects a new picture with a certain friend in your camera roll.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
The option to enable the feature will begin to show up in Messenger this week. If you don't opt-in, you won't see suggestions for the photos you take, though you will appear in the suggestions of your friends who have the feature enabled if you have <a href="https://www.facebook.com/help/122175507864081" style="color: #00aeef; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">tag suggestions</a>enabled.</div>

Say you snap a photo of a group of friends at a party, Facebook will detect the faces of people you're friends with in the most recent image on your camera roll. Within a few seconds (if you're on Android) or a few minutes (if you're on iOS), you'll see a push notification suggesting you send the photo via Messenger to the friends who are in the photo.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
Photo Magic uses the same facial recognition technology in tag suggestions on Facebook and in the moments app, Peter Martinazzi, a product manager for Messenger, said.</div>

"It’s all using the same tech on the back end," Martinazzi tells <em>Mashable</em>. "If you get a new picture, whether you took that picture in your camera app or in a different app, and it goes to your camera roll, then we’ll face detect on that picture. Then we’ll send you the local notification for you to send that photo [to friends] if you want to."</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
As with most facial recognition tech, there's the possibility that users may be a little creeped out at the prospect of Facebook looking for faces in photos, but Martinazzi emphasized that anyone can opt out of either having their face detected in photos or seeing suggestions for their own images.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
The suggestions will follow the same settings you have enabled in the main Facebook app, so those who have <a href="https://www.facebook.com/help/122175507864081" style="color: #00aeef; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">tag suggestions</a> disabled won't be able to have their faces detected in friends' camera rolls. (Photo Magic will not detect the faces of people that aren't Facebook friends.)</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
Though the experiment is Australia only for now, Martinazzi says the goal is to eventually bring it to more countries — provided people respond well to the initial tests.</div>

<br />
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
Facebook is going all out on India. That makes sense. With Mark Zuckerberg looking ahead at saturation in mature markets like Europe and North America, and with his social network locked out of China, he's pushing forward a lot of things to ensure that Facebook gains plenty of growth from India.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
<a href="https://www.techinasia.com/zuck-sidesteps-tough-questions-india-visit/" style="color: #00aeef; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">130 million</a> Indian people now use Facebook actively. But Facebook wants a lot more. It wants "the next billion people," as the company has called them, who'll use Facebook and all its sister apps, like Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, and Instagram.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
Asia as a whole is vital to Facebook's future. The site hit 496 million monthly active users in Asia-Pacific at the last count. Soon, the region will have more active Facebook users than Europe, the US, and Canada combined.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
Here are five recent ploys — including several that happened this week — which show Facebook's renewed determination to win in India:</div>
<h3 style="background-color: white; clear: left; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18px; line-height: 1.27; margin: 0px 0px 1rem; text-rendering: optimizelegibility;">
1. Getting more people online in the first place</h3>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
One challenge in the India market is that not many people are online yet. <a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" name="poor-infrastructure-and-low" style="color: #00aeef;"></a></div>

India now has <a href="https://www.techinasia.com/india-move-236-million-mobile-internet-users-2016/" style="color: #00aeef; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">350 million active Internet users</a>, which shows the population of 1.25 billion doesn't have easy or fair access.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
Facebook started to tackle this problem in India in February last year with Internet.org, its scheme to offer free access to a selection of sites and apps for people who would otherwise be offline. It does this by partnering with one telco in each company where it's rolled out.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
However, this has been controversial. Since Internet.org does not offer access to the whole Internet, many observers and governments slammed the plan as akin to demolishing Net Neutrality.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
The backlash is especially strong in India, forcing Zuckerberg to rethink the way Internet.org operated in the country. Last month, the program was renamed Free Basics. This week, it opened up to developers so they could <a href="https://www.techinasia.com/facebook-awards-social-startups-for-internet-org/" style="color: #00aeef; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">create services aimed at people in India's countryside</a>, such as farmers and students.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
Although Facebook has sweetened the deal for its (very limited) free Internet, the company is not yet out of hot water and a name change to Free Basics doesn't mean people will forget about the Net Neutrality issue.</div>
<h3 style="background-color: white; clear: left; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18px; line-height: 1.27; margin: 0px 0px 1rem; text-rendering: optimizelegibility;">
2. Changing Facebook so it works better on slower connections</h3>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
To make sure users in India don't run into issues on Facebook caused by slow web connections, Facebook earlier this month <a href="https://newsroom.fb.com/news/2015/10/news-feed-fyi-building-for-all-connectivity/" style="color: #00aeef; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">said it would start</a> "building for all connectivity." That means making tweaks to the News Feed so that, when the site notices a user is on a 2G or shaky line, it won't load videos, and instead the News Feed will show more status updates and links.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
If a connection is flaking out, Facebook is now ready for that too. "Sometimes we are unable to load any new News Feed stories if a connection is particularly congested or poor quality. People have told us that when they visit News Feed they'd rather see stories that may have loaded on a previous visit than not see any stories at all. So now when you leave News Feed and then come back again on a bad connection, we will display previously downloaded stories," explained Chris Marra and Alex Sourov from the emerging markets team at Facebook.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
Prior to all that, Facebook <a href="https://www.techinasia.com/facebook-launches-facebook-lite-india-users/" style="color: #00aeef; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">built a stripped-down Lite version</a> of its app.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
"Over 875 million people in the world access the Internet through 2G and we wanted to create a good user experience for these users to enable better access in emerging markets," said Vijay Shankar, product manager at Facebook, back in June.</div>
<h3 style="background-color: white; clear: left; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18px; line-height: 1.27; margin: 0px 0px 1rem; text-rendering: optimizelegibility;">
3. Understanding what using the web in India is like</h3>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
In order to build those modifications, and so that Facebook's team better understand how their users sometimes struggle to get online, the company <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-2g-tuesdays-to-slow-employee-internet-speeds-down-2015-10" style="color: #00aeef; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">this week rolled out "2G Tuesdays."</a> <a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" name="each-week-on-that" style="color: #00aeef;"></a></div>

<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
Facebook director Tom Alison says it's a way to help close the "empathy gap" between Silicon Valley and emerging markets.</div>

The slow speeds came as a shock to the staff at HQ. "It definitely tested my patience — it felt like parts of the product were just broken," Tom told <em>Business Insider</em>.</div>

4. New ad format for people who can't view videos</h3>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
Facebook has a big revenue problem when it comes to Asia. Although it's the biggest region in terms of users, it pulls in the smallest chunk of cash. This chart from Facebook shows the crisis clearly:</div>

In order to start fixing that, Facebook today <a href="https://www.facebook.com/business/news/slideshow?__mref=message_bubble" style="color: #00aeef; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">lifted the lid on Slideshow</a>, a video creation tool aimed at marketers and businesses in emerging markets. The tool is now available worldwide today through Facebook's ad website.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
The idea is that people in emerging markets or on very basic phones will struggle to watch videos, so marketers can still get seen by those people by creating an ad made up of a slideshow of images. It looks like this:</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">

<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
The images can be photos, video stills, or be plucked from a Shutterstock library that Facebook makes available. The slideshow of three to seven images will have a running time of about five to 15 seconds. Companies can add effects like transitions. Audio will not be supported at this initial stage.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
Kelly MacLean, Facebook's product marketing lead for emerging markets, mentioned at the launch event that users in developing nations respond a lot more to ads than their developed market counterparts. She says they want to connect with brands and they often share ads they like, taking screenshots and sending them to friends or displaying them on their profiles.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
Ads being Facebook's bread and butter, it's only natural for the company to want to harness that audience.</div>
<h3 style="background-color: white; clear: left; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18px; line-height: 1.27; margin: 0px 0px 1rem; text-rendering: optimizelegibility;">
5. Zuck drops by</h3>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
The final aspect of Facebook's massive India is Zuckerberg's charm offensive.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
Zuckerberg was in India for much of this week — his second trip to the country this year. He toured the Taj Mahal on Tuesday, and then <a href="https://www.techinasia.com/zuck-sidesteps-tough-questions-india-visit/" style="color: #00aeef; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">on Wednesday he gave a speech in Delhi</a> before answering — or, rather, dodging — questions.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
He referenced the "free Internet" scheme several times, but it's still a hard sell in India. Critics of the scheme say it only helps Facebook get new users, and all people get in return is access to a limited bundle of sites. A local <a href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/tech/internet/savetheinternet-in-takes-on-zuckerberg-and-internet-org-on-net-neutrality-half-truths-blames-facebook-on-creating-digital-divide-in-india/articleshow/49583323.cms" style="color: #00aeef; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">group called Savetheinternet.in accuses Zuckerberg</a> of creating "a new digital divide: those who access Facebook and its partner services, and those who access the open Internet."</div>

Perhaps Zuckerberg needs to dial up the charm a bit higher. Or, <a href="https://www.techinasia.com/talk/mark-zuckerberg-speech-chinese-strong-sense-mission/" style="color: #00aeef; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">once he's nailed Mandarin</a>, he could try learning Hindi.</div>

<a href="http://expresshackings.blogspot.al/search/label/Social%20media" style="color: #00aeef; text-decoration: none;">Facebook</a> has well over a billion users, but it's not stopping there: It wants all those users — with wildly different hardware — to have an experience that keeps them coming back.</div>

That's why it built an entirely new mobile News Feed designed to work with the 2G cellular connections that are common in developing countries. Facebook announced this new News Feed in a <a href="http://newsroom.fb.com/news/2015/10/news-feed-fyi-building-for-all-connectivity/" style="color: #00aeef; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">blog post</a>.</div>

The Facebook app we enjoy in the U.S. is great, but it requires a fairly robust cellular data connection or Wi-Fi to work. With LTE, that's not a problem, but for those in emerging markets where only 2G connections are available, it's often too heavy.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.5555562973022px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
To solve this, Facebook developed an open-source "<a href="https://github.com/facebook/network-connection-class" style="color: #00aeef; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">Network Connection Class</a>" that can determine the connection strength and tailor the News Feed accordingly.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.5555562973022px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
For example, users on a slower connection will be served more text statuses and links than videos. The News Feed will also load additional stories while the user stops scrolling to read a friend's status.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.5555562973022px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
Facebook will also save previously downloaded content to user's phones, so if there's no Internet connection at all, users can still scroll through previously downloaded status updates.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.5555562973022px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">

SAN FRANCISCO — Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg confirmed the social network has ambitions in augmented reality, not just virtual reality.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.5555562973022px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
Speaking Wednesday at Vanity Fair's New Establishment Summit, Zuckerberg was asked if the company was working on augmented reality. "Yeah," he said, adding that "it's a bit farther out."</div>
<div class="see-also" style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.5555562973022px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 25px; text-transform: uppercase;">

<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.5555562973022px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
While virtual reality promises a fully immersive experience, augmented reality provides a layer of digital information overlaid onto what you are seeing (like the experience offered by Microsoft's HoloLens.)</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.5555562973022px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
"Augmented reality will be here but it's a long road to get there," said Michael Abrash, chief scientist of Oculus VR, who was on the panel with Zuckerberg. The challenge with AR, Abrash said, is that it's more difficult to present it in a consumer friendly format.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.5555562973022px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
Zuckerberg spoke at length about the opportunity of virtual reality for Facebook. "Every 10 or 15 years there's a new computing platform," he said. "Mobile is the first platform that's really natural, but it's not the end of the line."</div>
<br />
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.5555562973022px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
Echoing comments made by Facebook's engineering head last month, Zuckerberg said the web has evolved from a text based platform to photos and video and that virtual reality is the next step.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.5555562973022px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
The company unveiled the consumer-ready version of the Rift earlier this year. It will come with an Xbox One controller but the company is also working on its own controller calledOculus Touch. Still in a prototype stage, the controllers will allow people grab and manipulate things inside virtual reality.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.5555562973022px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">

<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.5555562973022px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
The company known for using reminder emails to get you to use its professional networking service will now have to pay a hefty sum for taking the tactic a bit too far.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.5555562973022px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
In an email sent by LinkedIn on Friday, users were notified that they were eligible for a class action settlement related to email marketing. The company has agreed to pay out $13 million to users who may have been impacted by its Add Connections service. The settlement stems from a 2013 class action lawsuit filed in California.</div>
<div class="see-also" style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.5555562973022px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 25px; text-transform: uppercase;">
<div class="inline-ad-seealso" style="margin: 0px 18.75px 0px auto; max-width: 625px;">
</div>
</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.5555562973022px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
LinkedIn's Add Connections program allowed users to import their personal contacts into the company's system and then have invitations to connect on LinkedIn sent out on their behalf. However, if a recipient of the invitation email didn't accept the invitation within a certain amount of time, LinkedIn would then send two follow up emails repeating the invitation.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.5555562973022px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
If you're a big fan of LinkedIn, that's called thorough follow-up. But others, less familiar with the service, might consider such messages to be annoying spam. What makes such an instance worse is if the recipient thinks the spammy messages are coming from you, a person they know, rather than a third party.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.5555562973022px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
The key here is in LinkedIn's email persistence without the user's consent. On the <a href="http://www.addconnectionssettlement.com%20/" style="color: #00aeef; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">settlement website</a>, Gilardi & Co., the legal firm handling the payout, states:</div>
<blockquote style="background-color: white; border-left-color: rgb(221, 221, 221); border-left-width: 4px; border-style: none none none solid; color: #777777; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.5555562973022px; line-height: 25px; margin: 0px 0px 0px 36px; padding: 0px 0px 0px 12px;">
<div style="font-size: 1.5rem; line-height: 1.2; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
The Court found that members consented to importing their contacts and sending the connection invitation, but did not find that members consented to LinkedIn sending the two reminder emails.</div>
</blockquote>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.5555562973022px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
Within the settlement notification emails are individual claim ID numbers, which can then be used to file a claim for your chunk of $13 million. Of course, no one is expecting any of the claimants to win big money, but if the final tally of any of the claimants results in an individual payout of less than $10, LinkedIn has agreed to add an additional $750,000 to the overall payout fund.</div>
<figure class="image" style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.5555562973022px; line-height: 25px; margin: 0px 0px 50px; position: relative;"><div style="padding: 0px;">

LinkedIn's payout is designed to cover a broad range of email activity, from September 17, 2011 and October 31, 2014. But for LinkedIn users, there's a catch. On the claim form you must swear (under penalty of perjury) that you were indeed a user of Add Connections during the aforementioned time span. So if you're just annoyed by LinkedIn emails, but aren’t sure if you used Add Connections yourself, you may want to check before you submit your claim for a slice of the payout.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.5555562973022px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
Although LinkedIn is making the massive payment to address legal claims around email abuse, the company itself hasn't directly admitted to any wrongdoing.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.5555562973022px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
When contacted by <em>Mashable</em>, a LinkedIn spokesperson stated that because the court, "suggested that we could be more clear about the fact that we send reminder emails about pending invitations from LinkedIn members, we have made changes to our product and Privacy Policy. Ultimately, we decided to resolve this case so that we can put our focus where it matters most: finding additional ways to improve our members’ experiences on LinkedIn."</div>

The deadline for filing a claim is December 14.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.5555562973022px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">

YouTube just got a redesign.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
The video streaming service updated its <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/youtube/id544007664?mt=8" style="color: #00aeef; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">iOS app</a>, giving it a material design treatment and in-app video editing tools. Launch the app, and you'll notice a major change. There's way more red, and you can toggle between Home, Subscriptions and Account using the tabs at the top. YouTube also tweaked its app icon, trading in a red background for white and white play button for red.</div>
<div class="see-also" style="font-weight: bold; text-transform: uppercase;">
<div class="inline-ad-seealso" style="margin: 0px 18.75px 0px auto; max-width: 625px;">
</div>
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
The app's previous home page design was mostly white and gray, and you accessed the navigation bar by sliding it open from the left of the screen. In the old app, you could upload videos from your phone, but now you can edit them, too. The tools are pretty standard right now. You can trim your video and choose from a handful of filters. There's also an option to add music. Choose from featured tracks, filter by genre and mood or upload songs that are already on your device.</div>
<figure class="image" style="margin: 0px 0px 50px; position: relative;"><div style="padding: 0px;">

What's the fun of watching TV without using social media to catch up with other fans?</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.5555562973022px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
Facebook's got some new tools aimed squarely at grabbing the "second screen," a fan experience that fast-moving Twitter has so far locked down.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.5555562973022px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
The social giant has announced a bevy of features that look to attract TV broadcasters by offering the chance to receive immediate feedback and content from their viewers.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.5555562973022px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
The goal: Deepening its relationships with a part of the media world that still holds the keys to very big advertising bucks.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.5555562973022px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
Bob Morgan, partner engineering director at Facebook, <a href="http://media.fb.com/2015/10/06/new-tools-for-broadcast/" style="color: #00aeef; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">wrote in a blog post</a> that the tools boil down to three particular areas: Engaging fans, polling them for their input, and curating photos and videos that can then be shown on TV.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.5555562973022px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
"Our own researchers discovered that Facebook usage peaks in primetime, in every country, and that the maximum daily Facebook audience occurs during maximum TV viewing," he wrote. "With all of this in mind, we want to enable broadcasters to create great experiences for their viewers around the programming they love, drive real-time participation and engage their audiences 24/7."</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.5555562973022px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
The new tools come just as Twitter introduced Moments, it's own curation tool that allows media companies to compile pictures, video and public sentiment into a coherent stream.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.5555562973022px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
Among the tools is a new way for viewers to submit pictures and videos to broadcasters, which Facebook billed as a way to solicit anything from audition videos to questions to be answered on air. Facebook noted that Fox News used this feature to take questions during its Republican presidential debate.</div>
<div class=" fb_reset" id="fb-root" style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.5555562973022px; line-height: 25px;">

SAN FRANCISCO — Despite Instagram's reputation for censoring certain imagesinvolving nudity, the company has apparently thought about allowing more sensitive content on the platform.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.5555562973022px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
During <em>Vanity Fair</em>'s New Establishment Summit in San Francisco on Tuesday, Instagram cofounder Kevin Systrom said the company has talked about creating an R-rated version of the service.</div>
<div class="see-also" style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.5555562973022px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 25px; text-transform: uppercase;">
<div class="inline-ad-seealso" style="margin: 0px 18.75px 0px auto; max-width: 625px;">
</div>
</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.5555562973022px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
The panel, which also included <em>Girls</em> star Lena Dunham and Yahoo's Katie Couric, began with a discussion of Dunham's take on Instagram. She said she found it more positive than most social media, like Twitter, which she taken steps back from more than once.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.5555562973022px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
The discussion quickly turned toward Instagram's policy on nudity, which has come under increasing scrutiny as Instagram's user base grows.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.5555562973022px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
Couric asked Systrom if he had ever considered creating an R-rated version of the service.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.5555562973022px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
"There have been discussions," he said, noting that it would become a slippery slope about "who decides what's R-rated."</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.5555562973022px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
"We’re not in the business of hosting porn," he added. "We focus on people being able to express themselves in beautiful ways."</div>
<br />
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.5555562973022px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
Nudity has been a controversial topic for Instagram as the company grapples with finding an appropriate balance with free expression. Critics have maintained the platform enforces policies that censor women's bodies, while Instagram has said it relies on its community to report inappropriate content.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.5555562973022px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
Systrom reiterated this on Tuesday, saying the company has "invested heavily" in maintaining Instagram's positive environment from the very beginning. He said nudity itself is not banned — though he did little to clarify what <em>is</em>, making for a rather unclear policy.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.5555562973022px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
The discussion Tuesday coincided with Instagram's five-year anniversary.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.5555562973022px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
<strong>UPDATE, October 7, 10:49 a.m. P.T:</strong> An Instagram spokesperson told <em>Mashable</em> the company has never had plans to create a separate version of the service.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.5555562973022px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">

Facebook just put some serious satellite oomph behind its Internet.org initiative, which aims to bring basic Internet access to developing countries.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.5555562973022px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
The company has partnered with French-based satellite operator Eutelsat in an attempt to deliver free Internet to sub-Saharan Africa using an AMOS-6 satellite, Eutelsat announced Monday.</div>
<div class="see-also" style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.5555562973022px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 25px; text-transform: uppercase;">
<div class="inline-ad-seealso" style="margin: 0px 18.75px 0px auto; max-width: 625px;">
</div>
</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.5555562973022px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
Facebook and Eutelsat signed a multi-year agreement with Israel-based satellite operator Spacecom; they plan to utilize the "entire broadband payload" of the satellite. AMOS-6 is scheduled to become operational in the second half of 2016. The AMOS-6 is a geostationary satellite whose Ka-band spot beams will provide broadband Internet to individual users and communities using affordable equipment.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.5555562973022px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
Though widely publicized since its launch in 2013, Internet.org was only present in only a handful of countries in Africa, including Ghana, Zambia, Senegal, South Africa, Malawi, Kenya, Democratic Republic of Congo and Tanzania. The new initiative should significantly increase that spread; a release from Eutelsat states the coverage will include "large parts of sub-Saharan Africa".</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.5555562973022px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
“Facebook’s mission is to connect the world and we believe that satellites will play an important role in addressing the significant barriers that exist in connecting the people of Africa,” Chris Daniels, VP of Internet.org said in a statement.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.5555562973022px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">

The company known for using reminder emails to get you to use its professional networking service will now have to pay a hefty sum for taking the tactic a bit too far.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
<div class="see-also" style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 22.5px; text-transform: uppercase;">
<div class="inline-ad-seealso" style="margin: 0px 18.75px 0px auto; max-width: 625px;">
</div>
</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
If you're a big fan of LinkedIn, that's called thorough follow-up. But others, less familiar with the service, might consider such messages to be annoying spam. What makes such an instance worse is if the recipient thinks the spammy messages are coming from you, a person they know, rather than a third party.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
<blockquote style="background-color: white; border-left-color: rgb(221, 221, 221); border-left-width: 4px; border-style: none none none solid; color: #777777; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px; margin: 0px 0px 0px 36px; padding: 0px 0px 0px 12px;">
<div style="font-size: 1.5rem; line-height: 1.2; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
The Court found that members consented to importing their contacts and sending the connection invitation, but did not find that members consented to LinkedIn sending the two reminder emails.</div>
</blockquote>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">

<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
Although LinkedIn is making the massive payment to address legal claims around email abuse, the company itself hasn't directly admitted to any wrongdoing.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">

<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">

<em>Minecraft</em> is stuck in the minds of millions of (mostly young) gamers — and game industry veteran John Carmack has said that he also has memories of being inside the blocky, stylized world.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
"As far as my brain is concerned, it is something that happened to me," Carmack explained.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
To Oculus's chief technology officer, who first made his name at id Software creating games like<em>Doom</em> and <em>Wolfenstein</em>, <em>Minecraft</em> represented something bigger than a game. Carmack saw it as a metaverse full of connected worlds and players, with content being created by its users. And now that world is coming to Oculus, via Windows 10.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
"<em>Minecraft</em> was my quest. I thought it would be critically important to get it into VR," he said during his keynote address at Oculus Connect, a now-annual gathering of virtual reality developers and enthusiasts in Los Angeles.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
Carmack's "quest" took him to speak with Markus Persson — better known as "Notch,"<em>Minecraft</em>'s creator. This was shortly after Notch famously blew up."</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
<br />Carmack said Notch did eventually soften his stance — but by then, Microsoft had <a data-crackerjax="#post-slider" href="http://mashable.com/2014/09/15/microsoft-mojang-minecraft/" style="color: #00aeef; text-decoration: none;">purchased</a>the game and its creator for $2.5 billion. Notch famously exited Mojang at that time, saying he was done with <em>Minecraft</em>. At that point, Carmack had to approach Mojang and Microsoft directly, he said.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
"I wanted to drive home this case: 'We don't want to ask anything from you. Just let us try. Let me try to build this. If you think it's cool, we'll figure out what we're gonna do from there. I am so confident it will be cool I’ll agree to just about anything here,'" he explained. "They gave me access, but we signed a contract that our lawyers were like, 'This is terrible. They own everything you do. We can't guarantee any of this will happen. John, you’re basically working for Microsoft by okaying this.'"</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
But to Carmack, it was worth it. After he spent several months tinkering with <em>Minecraft</em> on Gear VR, getting <em>Minecraft: Pocket Edition</em> to work smoothly, he said the final decisions were left up to the business heads at Mojang and Oculus.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
"I said on the phone, 'If this doesn't happen, I'm going to cry.' This is the best thing we can do for the platform. I think it's the single most important application we can do for virtual reality, to make sure we have an army of fanatic, passionate supporters that will advocate why VR is great. It's part of this infinite playability we're currently lacking in our current set of titles.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
"This was a huge win for me, and everyone at Oculus and Facebook that made this happen — you have my deepest gratitude."</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
